Vision and eye pressure are measured, and the front of the eye and the retina are examined, so a problem can be found earlier and treatment planned for that patient.
Optometry measures the eyeglass prescription and how clearly the patient sees at distance and near. It guides glasses, contact lenses, and later decisions.
After the refractive error is measured, a prescription is chosen for distance, near vision, or both, so the patient sees more clearly and with less strain.
A prescription lens corrects vision and a cosmetic lens changes eye color. Either is fitted only after the cornea and the prescription have been checked.
An ocular prosthesis is made for a person who has lost an eyeball or has a small, disfigured eye. Its shape and color are matched to the other eye.
Corneal and retinal imaging shows the layers of the eye in detail. It helps detect keratoconus, macular disease, and diabetic changes, and makes later follow-up possible.
Slit-lamp photography records a clear image of the eyelid, conjunctiva, cornea, and the rest of the front of the eye, for diagnosis, explanation, and later comparison.
If the tear duct is blocked, tears stay on the eye and irritation may keep returning. Opening the duct restores drainage. It is done in children and adults, depending on the cause.
A premature infant may develop retinopathy of prematurity, and late diagnosis can threaten sight. A retinal examination at the right time shows which baby needs follow-up or treatment.
Some eyelid, ocular-surface, and minor cosmetic treatments are done in the clinic with no overnight stay. The patient goes home the same day after aftercare is explained.
Retinal laser in the clinic is used to seal leaking vessels, limit abnormal vessels, or surround a peripheral retinal tear. It is outpatient treatment and usually needs no admission.
